Your Diamonds need to be well protected
Surprisingly, even natural stones may acquire fine films of dust, dirt and smudges on them, quite easily. Diamonds are generally in close contact with the skin of the wearer. Naturally, sweat, natural oils from the skin, lotions, soaps and powdery leftovers tend to affect the brilliant lustre of your jewellery. Then again, the chemicals in a polluted atmosphere may cause discoloration via oxidative reactions. The following tips may prove handy for your jewellery safekeeping. A word of caution here; do not perform the cleaning in a sink or over the drain.
- Cold Water Soak: The solution should comprise of four parts of cold water and one part of an extremely mild dishwashing detergent. It might be best to soak the pieces, one at a time, just for a few minutes each. As you lift out each item from the solution, tap the entire area around the mounting with a soft brush. Be gentle in your movements. Rinse the piece in the same solution, remove, and place on tissue paper for draining out excess water.
- Detergent Bath: Pour some household liquid detergent into warm water for preparing a soapy solution. Please ensure that you use a very mild detergent and avoid anything that contains chlorine. Soak a single piece of jewellery in the warm suds while using a soft brush on it. Lather will form around it. Remove the item and place it on a metal or plastic strainer. Rinse with warm water, until all the suds clinging to it are gone. Finally, pat it dry with the help of a soft, lint-free napkin or cloth.
- Quick Dip: There are reputed brands selling jewellery cleaners: purchase a liquid, which is best suited for the metals, gemstones and diamonds that have been used to create your jewellery pieces. All the instructions are outlined on the labels; just follow them carefully. Use gloves while cleaning or you will leave stains on the stones.
- Ultrasonic Cleaner: This small machine comes fitted with a metal cup. Fill it with a mixture of cold water and a very mild detergent. Soak a piece of jewellery in the mixture, and turn on the machine. Your diamonds begin to sparkle again, because the high-frequency turbulence removes smudges and stains within a matter of minutes. Do read the instructions and warnings very carefully, before you use the machine.
It would be good to have your valuables go through an annual examination. You may not be able to view the fine damages on the surfaces or loose stones; the experienced expert will be able to note them. As for storage, please use fabric-lined cases or boxes with dividers in them. You do not want one diamond scratching a neighbouring diamond. The same precautions apply, when you are travelling.
Maybe, you are keen to wear your jewellery all the time, even while performing domestic chores. Ensure that it keeps its distance from chlorine beach. Regardless, it would be best to remove the items when indulging in yard work and rough household chores.
